TIFF 2024: Really Happy Someday (Coming Soon Movie Trailer)
No movie trailer yet.
Get ready to be swept away by Really Happy Someday, an intimate and heartfelt film debuting at TIFF 2024. Directed by J Stevens, this touching story centers on Z (played by the talented Breton Lalama), a musical theatre performer navigating the complexities of identity, love, and voice.
A New Voice, A New Beginning
Before his transition, Z was a rising star in Toronto’s musical theatre scene. His performance as Éponine in Les Misérables is still a legend among theatre lovers. But as testosterone injections change his voice, Z faces a new challenge: learning to sing in a register he’s never known. It’s not just about hitting the high notes anymore; it’s about finding harmony between his past and present self.
Z embarks on a journey of retraining his voice with the help of Shelly, a seasoned vocal coach played by Ali Garrison. These sessions feel as authentic as they come — no acting required here, as Garrison is a real-life vocal coach, and Lalama’s expressions of surprise and joy when hitting those elusive notes are 100% real.
More Than Just a Story About Singing
Really Happy Someday is about so much more than just singing again. It’s a deeply personal look at community, self-acceptance, and the struggles of embracing who you are. Z’s story highlights the universal need to feel comfortable in your own skin, but also the beauty of a supportive partner (played by Khadijah Roberts-Abdullah) and the community that uplifts you.
In between his vocal retraining sessions, Z takes on a job as a barback at Squirly’s, a familiar spot on Queen West, where he works for Santi (Xavier Lopez). As Z navigates the ups and downs of this new chapter in his life, the support from unexpected places shows him (and us) the power of true community.
A Small but Mighty Film
Created by a small but incredibly passionate team, Really Happy Someday is the product of collaboration between director J Stevens and Breton Lalama, who both drew from their own lived experiences. The raw authenticity of the storytelling is what makes this film stand out. It’s real, it’s personal, and it’s full of heart.
Whether you’re into musical theatre, love stories of personal growth, or just enjoy indie films with soul, Really Happy Someday is a must-watch. It reminds us that no matter where life takes us, we can find our voice again — even if it sounds a little different.
