Terry Fox to Grace Canada’s New $5 Bank Note
The federal government has announced that Canadian icon Terry Fox will appear on the next $5 bank note, replacing former prime minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. The news came as part of the 2024 Fall Economic Statement (FES), released on December 16.

A Fitting Honour for a National Hero
Fox became a symbol of hope and determination through his Marathon of Hope in 1980. Running 42 kilometres daily on a prosthetic leg, Fox aimed to raise awareness and funds for cancer research. By February 1981, the marathon had raised $24.7 million – $1 for every Canadian at the time. His journey was cut short when cancer spread to his lungs, leading to his passing at just 22 years old.
The government described Fox as a “Canadian hero”, acknowledging his ability to show that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through willpower and perseverance.
Terry Fox’s legacy transcends differences—his courage and determination continues to inspire and unite not just his hometown of Port Coquitlam, but people from all over the world. Inspiring Future Generations
The decision to place Terry Fox on the $5 bill aims to inspire Canadians to continue his mission. The FES noted that this move encourages more Canadians to “give $5” to cancer research, aligning with the cause Terry Fox championed.
Fox’s legacy continues through the annual Terry Fox Runs, held across Canada and internationally. To date, these events have raised over $850 million for cancer research, carrying forward his vision for a cancer-free future.
What Happens to Wilfrid Laurier?
Sir Wilfrid Laurier, Canada’s first francophone prime minister, will not be removed entirely. The federal government confirmed Laurier will appear on the next version of the $50 note. It remains unclear whether William Lyon Mackenzie King, currently on the $50 bill, will move to another note or be retired.
A Community Effort
Fox’s hometown of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, played a significant role in advocating for this honour. Mayor Brad West expressed pride on behalf of the community, describing Fox’s impact as one that “transcends differences”.
In 2020, the Bank of Canada held a six-week public consultation to decide the new face of the $5 bill. Terry Fox emerged as one of eight finalists chosen from 600 nominations of iconic Canadians. His selection reflects the overwhelming admiration Canadians hold for his legacy.
A Legacy That Lives On
Terry Fox’s story is a testament to courage, resilience, and hope. From his inspiring run to his enduring impact on cancer research, Fox remains a cherished figure in Canadian history. As Canadians hold the new $5 bill in their hands, it will serve as a reminder of his remarkable journey and the difference one person can make.
