Asteroid C0WEPC5 Creates Fireball Over Siberia; Massive Asteroid 2020 XR to Pass Earth This Week
On Tuesday morning, a small asteroid named C0WEPC5 entered Earth’s atmosphere, creating a bright fireball over northeastern Siberia. This event marked the fourth detected asteroid strike this year, with a second, much larger asteroid set to pass by Earth this week.
Asteroid C0WEPC5 Enters Earth’s Atmosphere
The 27-inch asteroid, temporarily named C0WEPC5, was detected by the Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. It entered Earth’s atmosphere at 11:15 a.m. ET, over Yakutia in Siberia.
Asteroid #C0WEPC5 (temporary designation) entered Earth's atmosphere at 16:15 UTC/17:15 CET, creating a fireball over Yakutia witnessed by people in the region.

The European Space Agency (ESA) issued an alert before the impact, confirming the asteroid would create a visible fireball but pose no danger. Video footage shared on social media captured the fast-moving fireball streaking across the Siberian sky before it dissipated. Officials have yet to determine whether any debris reached the ground.
This asteroid impact is one of only 11 detected strikes in recorded history, referred to as “imminent impactors.”
Frequent Fly-Bys and Improved Detection

Asteroid fly-bys are common, and technological advancements have significantly improved detection rates. Since October 2023, astronomers have identified 132 asteroids passing closer to Earth than the moon’s distance, according to NASA.
In total, 36,000 fly-bys have been recorded to date. However, only a few, like C0WEPC5, are classified as “imminent impactors.”
Upcoming Asteroid 2020 XR to Pass Earth
On Wednesday, December 4, asteroid 2020 XR will make a close approach to Earth. Measuring 1,200 feet in diameter, roughly the height of the Empire State Building, it is significantly larger than C0WEPC5.
Despite its size, the asteroid will remain at a safe distance of 1.37 million miles from Earth, far enough to avoid any impact. NASA considers objects within 4.6 million miles of Earth as “potentially hazardous,” though officials confirm this asteroid poses no risk.
Key Takeaways
- C0WEPC5 entered Earth’s atmosphere over Siberia, creating a harmless but visible fireball.
- The event marked Earth’s fourth detected asteroid strike of 2024 and one of only 11 ever recorded.
- 2020 XR, a much larger asteroid, will pass Earth at 1.37 million miles early Wednesday morning.
- NASA continues to monitor such events, highlighting advancements in asteroid detection and tracking.
This week’s celestial events underscore the importance of technology in identifying and understanding near-Earth objects, ensuring preparedness for potential asteroid threats in the future.
