Interview Video: TIFF 2024: Bonjour Tristesse Star Aliocha Schneider Teases Romance
If you love sun-drenched coming-of-age tales with a twist of drama, Bonjour Tristesse is a film that’s sure to capture your imagination at TIFF 2024. Directed by Montreal-based filmmaker Durga Chew-Bose, this adaptation of Françoise Sagan’s iconic novel brings to life the sun-soaked French Riviera, where youthful dreams and complex relationships collide.
A Postcard-Perfect Summer… or So It Seems
In Bonjour Tristesse, we follow the carefree summer of 18-year-old Cécile (played by Lily McInerny), who’s living her best life at a French seaside villa with her dashing father Raymond (Claes Bang) and his free-spirited girlfriend Elsa (Naïlia Harzoune). With no cares in the world and a budding romance with a local boy, Cécile is soaking up the sun and the bohemian vibes. Everything feels postcard-perfect—until Anne (Chloë Sevigny), a close friend of her late mother, shows up and casts a shadow over their carefree life.
Growing Pains in Paradise
As Cécile tries to navigate her relationships with the adults around her, she learns some hard truths about the people she admires—and about herself. The film beautifully captures the tension between youthful innocence and the realities of adult life. Anne’s arrival upends Cécile’s idyllic world, forcing her to confront uncomfortable emotions and discover her own desires.
A Fresh Take on a Classic Novel
Durga Chew-Bose’s adaptation of Sagan’s beloved novel feels both timeless and fresh. Sagan originally wrote Bonjour Tristesse when she was just 18, and this film masterfully translates the novel’s emotional depth and stylish settings onto the big screen. With lush cinematography, fabulous costumes by Miyako Bellizzi, and an evocative score by Lesley Barber, Bonjour Tristesse is as visually stunning as it is emotionally resonant.
Why You Should Watch
This film is more than just a beautiful summer drama. It explores the complexities of relationships between women and the ways in which they shape each other’s lives. If you’re a fan of coming-of-age stories that don’t shy away from raw emotion and hard truths, Bonjour Tristesse is a must-watch.
