Interview Video: ON SWIFT HORSES Q&A with Daisy Edgar-Jones & Jacob Elordi | TIFF 2024
If you’re looking for a film that’s going to transport you straight into the heart of the 1950s, On Swift Horses is your ticket. Making its world premiere at TIFF 2024, this adaptation of Shannon Pufahl’s 2019 novel is all about big risks, secret love, and figuring out who you really are.
What’s the Story?
Here’s the setup: Muriel (played by Daisy Edgar-Jones) and Lee (Will Poulter) are newlyweds who’ve just moved from Kansas to sunny San Diego. They’ve got the perfect plan — steady jobs, a nice house, and the idea of starting a family. But while Muriel is serving up coffee at a local diner, she’s secretly betting on horse races and raking in the cash.
On the flip side, we’ve got Julius (Jacob Elordi), Lee’s brother, fresh off the boat from the Korean War with no clue what to do next. Instead of settling down, Julius heads to Vegas, where he gets caught up in the high-stakes world of poker and casino life. There, he meets Henry (Diego Calva), a smooth-talking Chicano who loves a good gamble just as much as he does.
As Muriel and Julius walk their separate but eerily similar paths, they begin to uncover things about themselves that could either save them or lead them into even bigger trouble.
Why You Should Watch
On Swift Horses isn’t just about vintage vibes and cool old cars. It’s about real, raw emotions — those deep-seated desires and fears we all have. The film, directed by Daniel Minahan, dives into what it means to take risks, both in love and in life. Plus, the cinematography by Luc Montpellier captures the era’s look so beautifully that you’ll feel like you’re right there with them, whether it’s in the glitzy streets of Vegas or the quiet corners of San Diego.
If you’re into movies that make you think and feel — all while soaking in some seriously gorgeous visuals — this one’s for you.
