Coco’s Neighbourhood Coffee Shop Is Closing After Landlord Ends Lease
Toronto’s Little Italy is losing a local favourite. Coco’s Neighbourhood Coffee Shop will close for good on January 31, 2026, after the landlord refused to renew its lease. The decision caught owner Nicole Bilyea and her team off guard.
A Sudden Goodbye on College Street
Sitting at 668 College Street, Coco’s has been a go-to for baked goods, custom cakes, and latte art that drew regulars from all over the city. Bilyea said everything seemed fine until recently when she was told the lease wouldn’t be renewed — the landlord’s sister plans to turn the space into a homeopathy clinic.
“It caught us completely off guard,” Bilyea shared in a recent interview. “We just finished upgrades — a new patio, electrical work — and suddenly, we’re told we have to leave.”
Community Shock and Support
The timing couldn’t have been worse. Bilyea is preparing for maternity leave, and with the holidays approaching, the café will miss its busiest season. Locals quickly took to social media to share memories and frustration, calling Coco’s one of Little Italy’s most welcoming cafés.
The story struck a chord with many Toronto small-business owners who’ve faced similar challenges — investing years into a space only to lose it to rising rents or changing landlord priorities.
What’s Next for Coco’s
Coco’s will stay open until the end of January 2026, giving regulars one last chance to enjoy their favourite coffee and pastries before the lights go out. Bilyea hasn’t confirmed a new location yet but says she’s open to the idea once things settle down.
Until then, Toronto coffee lovers are stopping by to say thanks — and goodbye — to a café that’s been part of their everyday lives.
