Interview Video: Randy Bachman premieres ‘Takin’ Care of Business’ at TIFF

Randy Bachman is more than just a Canadian rock legend; he’s a master storyteller. With a career that spans decades and hits that defined an era, his stories of life in the fast lane with The Guess Who and Bachman-Turner Overdrive are filled with humour, heart, and a bit of mystery. In Takin’ Care of Business, director Tyler Measom brings those stories to life in a fast-paced, fun documentary, set to make its world premiere at TIFF 2024.

The Story Behind the Legend

Bachman’s journey is packed with incredible highs and some seriously unexpected twists. From chart-topping fame with hits like “American Woman” and “Takin’ Care of Business” to his unique path as a musician who married into the Mormon faith, the film dives deep into the rock star’s personal and professional life. But what really drives the story is his deep, almost obsessive, love for his vintage 1957 Gretsch guitar—a guitar that would one day mysteriously disappear while he was on tour.

This isn’t your typical rock doc. Sure, there’s plenty of sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll, but the heart of the film is about a man who lost his beloved guitar and spent years trying to get it back. With previously unseen footage from the ’70s and ’80s, and commentary from those closest to him, including his son, Tal Bachman (remember his hit “She’s So High”?), Takin’ Care of Business brings a wild yet intimate look at what it’s like to balance rock stardom and personal passions.

A Journey Fueled by Music and Obsession

The missing Gretsch guitar becomes a character of its own in this film. When it vanishes, Bachman goes on a relentless quest to find it. He scours the world, buys every similar guitar he can find, and even thinks he spots it in a Thompson Twins music video. The mystery of the guitar is fascinating, but it’s the emotion and dedication behind the search that really hooks you. Bachman’s love for this instrument transcends materialism—it’s a piece of his soul, and his journey to recover it takes us halfway across the globe, from health scares to COVID lockdowns.

Whether you’re a die-hard fan of The Guess Who or Bachman-Turner Overdrive, or just love a good story, this documentary is packed with surprises, and as the tagline says—you ain’t seen nothing yet.
