Toronto’s Local Coffee Spots: 6 Cafés You Need on Your Radar

· · · · ·

Coffee parties are cute. But a full-on café crawl? That’s the move. We hit the streets with the first-ever Mazda Coffee Tour Toronto—a caffeine-fueled ride inspired by Mazda’s whole “make the everyday feel exciting” energy.

On May 21, 2025, alongside press, TV producers, and a crew of influencers, we took over Toronto—one espresso shot at a time.

Mazda’s Move and Be Moved campaign turned our usual coffee runs into something a little deeper (less tears, more caffeine). The theme? Coffee tourism. And Mazda’s all in—driving Canadians to discover local cafés, connect with indie roasters, and turn everyday rituals into something worth remembering. Because let’s be honest, a good flat white hits harder when there’s a story behind it.

And with the Mazda CX-70 and CX-90 leading the charge, we got to see how movement, connection, and craftsmanship come together—not just in the drive, but in every moment along the way.

Must-Try Coffee Shops in Toronto

Here’s your guide to our top spots, complete with locations so you can recreate our epic café crawl.

1. Balzac’s Coffee

We kicked things off bright and early at Balzac’s Coffee in the Distillery District, and honestly, there’s no better place to start a Toronto coffee tour. It’s one of those spots that feels effortlessly classic—warm, inviting, and serving the kind of coffee-and-pastry combo that makes early mornings feel like less of a chore.

We’ve arrived in around 9 AM, grabbed our first coffee of the day (plus something flaky on the side), and eased into the morning with some light, low-key networking.

Must-Try Menu Picks at Balzac’s

  • Salted Caramel Latte. This is the crowd favorite for a reason. A must if you like a little indulgence with your espresso.
  • Mocha. If you’re team chocolate and caffeine, this one nails the balance without going overboard.
  • Frappé (seasonal fav). Toronto summers hit different—and so does a Balzac’s frappé. Light, refreshing, and not too sweet, it’s a solid choice if you want something cold but still grown-up.
  • Chocolate Croissant. Classic. Flaky. Rich. It’s the kind of pastry that holds its own next to a strong brew.
  • Hobbit Muffin. This one’s for the hangry brunch crowd.

If you’re the type who brews at home (or wants to pretend you’re the kind of person who brews at home), grab a bag of their “A Dark Affair” beans. It’s a deep, bold roast—ideal for French press mornings or drip machine upgrades.

2. Subtext Coffee

Latte art workshop? We were ambitious. Turns out hearts and leaves aren’t as easy as they seem, but gave it our best shot! Still questionable, though. But A+ for effort. Ha.

If you’ve ever argued over water temperature for a V60, debated flat burrs vs. conical, or timed your bloom phase to the second—Subtext Coffee is your kind of place.

Set in the quieter, industrial edge of The Stockyards (part of the broader Junction area), Subtext doesn’t rely on foot traffic or flashy signage. It lives in a tucked-away unit on Cawthra Avenue, surrounded by warehouses and creative studios—exactly the kind of environment that keeps it grounded and intentional.

Inside, the aesthetic is clean and focused. Light pours in from the industrial windows, and the vibe is calm, almost meditative. There’s no rush here—just a handful of seats, a stellar Synesso machine, and shelves stocked with ethically sourced beans, ready to upgrade your home setup.

3. Gateau Ghost

A trendy Korean-Parisian brunch spot? Count us in. Located in the heart of Little Italy, Gateau Ghost is the kind of spot that makes you pause before digging in—because yes, everything is that Instagrammable. We loved the minimalist and calm with moody interiors that contrast beautifully against their playful, fusion-style menu. It’s a go-to for that perfect in-between of comfort food and experimental bites—ideal for slow mornings or content-worthy brunch runs.

Matcha was sold out (tragic), but here’s our rating anyway:

  • KFC Sando: a literal 10/10 – favorite
  • Owen’s Sando: 9/10, would eat again
  • Yuzu tonic: 7/10, refreshing
  • Hot chocolate: 8/10, comforting
  • Mimosa: 9/10, brunch essential

It’s a solid pick for:

  • Slow, content-filled brunch runs
  • Catching up with your “creative” friend who insists on bringing a film camera
  • Anyone who judges a place by its aesthetic and its food game (guilty)

4. Tsuchi Café

This plant-based gem is giving full zen energy—and yes, it’s fully vegan and fully Japanese-inspired. Tsuchi Café isn’t one of those flashy, over-designed places. It’s soft-spoken but intentional. The kind of spot that feels like it was meant to be a quiet part of your day.

I’ve got the iced matcha latte fix (because obviously), but the miso caramel macchiato stole the show. Unexpected. Rich. So good. Both drinks? 10/10.

But the matcha tiramisu? That one needs a warning label—1000/100 and dangerously addictive. To feel somewhat responsible, we grabbed an onigiri on the side… you know, for balance.

5. Piccolo Caffe E Vino

You can’t end a proper coffee crawl without a classic. Located on the lower level of Melrose on Adelaide, this Italian spot in the Entertainment District knows how to set the tone—espresso by day, vino by night. Piccolo keeps things simple and sharp, blending laid-back European café energy with a downtown Toronto edge. The space is intimate, the playlist fits, and the wine list hits that sweet spot between easygoing and well-considered.

Their affogato is done the right way—gelato, espresso, no extras needed. And if you’re after something more, the coffee cake holds its own without trying too hard. Small, solid, and very Italian.

6. Café Renée

Don’t let the unassuming entrance fool you—Café Renée is giving full “if you know, you know” energy. It’s moody, charmingly scrappy, and feels like it was plucked from a back alley in Paris and dropped into Queen West. The kind of place that doesn’t try too hard—and doesn’t need to.

We wrapped things up at this French-Italian-inspired gem—and honestly, it was the perfect finale. Café Renée has been on our list forever, and it lived up to the hype. Their thing? Espresso martinis. Choose from classic, crème brûlée, or rich chocolate versions (yes, we wanted them all). The overall vibe is effortlessly cool and unpretentious—exactly what you want after a full day of coffee hopping. Consider this your new go-to for caffeine with a kick.

We didn’t just sip coffee—we conquered a city-wide caffeine crusade with great people, delicious brews, and the sleek Mazda CX-70 Melting Copper Metallic making us feel bougie AF. Coffee parties? Cute. Café hopping with Mazda? Clearly the superior choice.
