TIFF 2024: Oh, Canada Movie Trailer
Paul Schrader’s latest film, Oh, Canada, makes its North American debut at TIFF 2024, bringing Richard Gere back into the fold with a role that could redefine his career. If you’re a fan of intense drama and complex characters, this one’s for you.
About the Film
In Oh, Canada, Richard Gere reunites with director Paul Schrader, 44 years after their collaboration on American Gigolo. Here, Gere takes on the role of Leonard Fife, a writer and draft dodger who fled to Canada during the Vietnam War. Now living in Montreal and facing terminal illness, Fife agrees to a documentary-style interview led by Malcolm (Michael Imperioli) and his team of former film students.
The film explores Fife’s life as he recounts it—both his achievements and his regrets. Uma Thurman stars as Fife’s wife, Emma, who is determined to safeguard her husband’s legacy. As the documentary progresses, the line between Fife’s carefully curated narrative and the raw truth of his life begins to blur.
Jacob Elordi joins the cast as the younger Fife, capturing the enigmatic charm Gere brought to his iconic role in American Gigolo. Schrader’s adaptation of Russell Banks’ novel Foregone is visually striking, using varying aspect ratios and color palettes to deepen the narrative’s emotional impact.
