Why Taste of Lawrence Still Feels Like One of Toronto’s Most Authentic Food Festivals
Toronto is home to plenty of summer food festivals, but not all of them feel the same. While many events feature the same travelling vendors from weekend to weekend, Taste of Lawrence continues to put the spotlight on the neighbourhood it calls home. After another successful year, many are asking whether it’s one of the city’s last truly community-focused food festivals.
The Authenticity Behind Taste of LawrencE
Hosted by the Wexford Heights BIA, Taste of Lawrence transforms Lawrence Avenue East between Warden Avenue and Birchmount Road into a three-day celebration of local food, live entertainment, and community programming.
This year’s festival also featured attractions including a FIFA World Cup-themed installation, the Rising Stars talent showcase, and the Ultimutts dog show, giving visitors plenty to see beyond the food.

Local Restaurants Take Centre Stage
One thing that continues to set Taste of Lawrence apart is its food vendors. Instead of relying heavily on travelling food trucks, many of the festival’s booths are operated by restaurants located right along Lawrence Avenue.
Several businesses even prepare food on grills outside their storefronts, creating an experience that feels closely connected to the neighbourhood rather than a travelling festival lineup.
While returning favourites like Tiny Tom Donuts and BeaverTails are still part of the event, local restaurants remain the main attraction.

Why Community Still Comes First
The festival has become a summer tradition for many Scarborough families, bringing together residents, local businesses, performers, and visitors each year.
During this year’s event, Toronto Mayor Olivia Chow described Taste of Lawrence as a festival that continues to celebrate local merchants and emerging artists while remaining closely tied to the Wexford community. After more than two decades, many families who attended as children are now returning with kids of their own.
A Menu That Reflects Scarborough
Taste of Lawrence highlights the diversity of Scarborough’s food scene through its mix of participating restaurants.
Visitors could sample everything from Caribbean doubles at Dave’s Drupatis to Japanese street food from Osaka Street Food, Korean-style rice hot dogs from Chungchun Rice Hot Dog, fresh drinks from 169 Juice, and skewers from Miss Greasy.
Rather than focusing on a single cuisine, the festival reflects the many cultures that make up the neighbourhood.

Why It Continues to Stand Out
As conversations continue around the changing identity of some Toronto street festivals, Taste of Lawrence remains focused on supporting the businesses and people who make the neighbourhood what it is.
After more than 22 years, the festival continues to bring together local restaurants, community organizations, performers, and families in a way that feels true to its roots.
