The Toronto International Film Festival, or TIFF, is one of the biggest film events on Toronto’s calendar, bringing films, filmmakers, celebrities, industry professionals, and movie fans into the downtown core every September.

Having attended several editions, I can say TIFF is about more than sitting inside a theatre for a screening. The festival changes the feel of downtown Toronto, with premieres, red carpets, industry events, fan gatherings, and plenty happening around the city.

The 2026 edition marks another major chapter for TIFF, with the launch of TIFF: The Market, the organization’s first official content market.

TIFF 2026 Dates

TIFF 2026 is taking place from September 10 to September 20, 2026, marking the festival’s 51st edition.

Throughout those 11 days, audiences can catch films across a range of programming sections, including Gala Presentations, Special Presentations, Discovery, Platform, Centrepiece, TIFF Docs, Wavelengths, Primetime, Short Cuts, TIFF Classics, and Midnight Madness.

The festival brings screenings and events to venues across downtown Toronto, making it easy to build a day around multiple films, restaurants, bars, and festival events.

New for 2026: TIFF: The Market

One of the biggest additions to TIFF 2026 is TIFF: The Market, the festival’s first official content market.

The inaugural market ran from September 10 to September 16, 2026, alongside the festival. It brings together professionals working across film, television, immersive media, and other forms of screen-based storytelling for meetings, screenings, industry programming, financing, sales, and distribution opportunities.

The Market expands TIFF’s role beyond the public festival, creating a dedicated space for producers, distributors, sales agents, financiers, buyers, and other industry professionals to connect.

For regular festivalgoers, this means another layer of activity happening around TIFF, although much of The Market programming is designed specifically for accredited industry participants.

What to Expect at TIFF 2026

The 2026 programme spans everything from major premieres and award-season titles to documentaries, emerging filmmakers, experimental cinema, genre films, and restored classics.

Some of the sections to look out for include:

  • Gala Presentations: Major films presented with some of the festival’s biggest premieres and red-carpet events.
  • Special Presentations: A mix of highly anticipated films and notable international and Canadian productions.
  • Discovery: A section focused on emerging filmmakers and their first or second feature films.
  • Midnight Madness: Late-night screenings dedicated to horror, action, cult, and genre cinema.
  • TIFF Docs: Documentaries covering a wide range of subjects and filmmaking styles.
  • Wavelengths: Experimental and avant-garde films for audiences looking for something outside conventional cinema.
  • TIFF Classics: Restored and celebrated films that give audiences a chance to revisit important pieces of film history.

The full 2026 programme is already available, so you can browse the current lineup and plan your screenings around the sections and films you want to see.

Tickets and Planning Your TIFF Visit

If you’re attending TIFF, planning ahead makes a huge difference.

Popular screenings can fill quickly, especially premieres and high-profile Gala and Special Presentation titles. TIFF also offers membership options that provide benefits around festival access, along with other year-round perks.

For 2026, it’s best to check TIFF directly for the latest ticket availability, screening times, venue information, and membership details rather than relying on prices from previous festival editions.

If you’re planning multiple screenings in one day, leave enough time between them to get to your next venue. Downtown Toronto can get particularly busy during TIFF, and walking between nearby venues is often part of the experience.

TIFF Venues

TIFF screenings and events take place at multiple locations throughout downtown Toronto, with TIFF Bell Lightbox remaining at the heart of the festival.

Other venues used throughout the festival include major downtown theatres and event spaces, depending on the film and programme.

One of my favourite parts of attending TIFF is walking around the Entertainment District between screenings. You never really know what you might come across, from a red-carpet arrival to fans waiting outside a premiere or a festival-related event happening nearby.

Tips for Attending TIFF 2026

If you’re planning to experience TIFF this year, here are a few things worth keeping in mind:

  • Check the official 2026 programme before choosing your screenings.
  • Give yourself enough time to travel between venues.
  • Arrive early, especially for popular screenings.
  • Don’t plan every minute of your day. Leave some room to explore downtown.
  • Look beyond the biggest premieres and check out Discovery, TIFF Docs, Short Cuts, Wavelengths, and other sections.
  • Keep an eye on TIFF’s official channels for programme updates and event information.
  • Budget for transportation, food, drinks, and other festival expenses in addition to your screening tickets.
  • If you’re interested in the industry side of TIFF, look into the access requirements for TIFF: The Market and other industry programming.

Why TIFF 2026 Is Worth Experiencing

TIFF is one of those Toronto events that extends beyond the theatres.

For film fans, it’s an opportunity to discover new movies and filmmakers. For the industry, TIFF remains an important meeting point for international film and entertainment professionals. And for everyone else, it’s a chance to experience Toronto at one of its busiest and most exciting times of year.

The launch of TIFF: The Market makes 2026 particularly notable, adding a new industry-focused component to an already established international film festival.

And if you’re not attending a single screening, you can still experience some of what TIFF brings to the city by exploring the downtown area and keeping an eye out for festival-related events and activity.

The Best-Dressed Celebrities at TIFF 2026

Of course, part of the fun of TIFF isn’t just the films. The red carpets are a major part of the festival experience, with actors, directors, filmmakers, and other guests arriving for premieres throughout the 11-day event.

TIFF 2026 has already brought plenty of star power to Toronto, making the red carpets another reason to keep an eye on what’s happening around the Entertainment District.

If you’re hoping to catch a glimpse of your favourite celebrity, keep in mind that red-carpet access and timing can vary by premiere and venue. For the best chance of seeing the action, follow TIFF’s official social channels and check event details before heading downtown.

And honestly, even if you don’t spot a celebrity, walking through Toronto during TIFF is an experience in itself. The city feels different when thousands of film fans, filmmakers, media, and industry professionals are moving through the same few downtown blocks.
