TTC Bus Driver Hailed a Hero After Rescuing Man from Burning Car
A TTC bus driver is being praised for his quick thinking and bravery after pulling a man from a burning car involved in a serious crash early Wednesday morning.
The Crash
The collision occurred around 4:50 a.m. at the intersection of Bathurst Street and Eglinton Avenue West. According to police, a speeding Honda sedan collided with a northbound TTC bus, causing it to crash into a second bus traveling in the opposite direction. The impact caused the Honda to burst into flames.
Heroic Act of the TTC Bus Driver
One of the TTC bus drivers, in a remarkable act of courage, rushed to the burning car and pulled the unconscious driver to safety before emergency services arrived. A trauma center received the Honda driver, who sustained life-threatening injuries. Three other people, including a TTC driver and two passengers, suffered minor injuries.
Investigation Underway
Police are investigating the crash and believe the Honda may have been stolen. They are asking anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward.
Marvin Alfred, president of ATU Local 113, the union representing TTC workers, commended the bus driver’s actions, calling him a “selfless hero.” He stated, “We are very proud of our operator who acted with composure and reacted swiftly in the face of danger.”
Greg Percy, interim TTC CEO, also praised the driver, saying the incident “is a perfect example of the integrity, responsibility, and care we strive to uphold at the TTC.”
The intersection remained closed for several hours as police investigated. The TTC detoured bus routes in the area.
